What to know before you choose
Physics at SPM level (Fizik, KSSM) is taught over Form 4 and Form 5, with content spanning Forces and Motion, Pressure, Heat, Waves, Light, Electricity and Magnetism, Electronics, and Nuclear Physics. Unlike Biology, which rewards careful memorisation, or Chemistry, which mixes memory with calculation, Physics is overwhelmingly calculation-driven.
Students who haven't built strong algebraic manipulation habits from Maths and Add Maths will find Physics particularly demanding. The structured response questions (Bahagian B and C) award marks for method and presentation as much as for the final numerical answer, so exam technique under tuition conditions is critical.
IGCSE Physics (Cambridge 0625) and A-Level Physics (Cambridge 9702) introduce mechanics, fields, quantum physics, and thermodynamics at a significantly higher level than the national SPM syllabus. A-Level Physics explicitly requires calculus application — particularly in kinematics, SHM, and capacitance — making strong Add Maths or A-Level Maths knowledge a genuine prerequisite. STPM Physics is widely considered one of the most demanding pre-university Physics papers in Southeast Asia; pass rates are low, and even strong SPM Physics students often find the jump difficult without structured tuition support from the beginning of Lower Six.
When selecting a Physics tutor, look for someone who can diagnose exactly why your child is losing marks — whether it's formula recall, unit conversion errors, diagram quality, or time management — and target those systematically. The most effective Physics tuition programmes run weekly timed practice papers alongside syllabus teaching, with mark scheme review forming a core part of every session.
For SPM, past-year papers from 2019–2024 are the most relevant; for IGCSE and A-Level, Cambridge specimen papers and examiner reports are essential reading.
