Cambridge O-Level
Cambridge O-Level is the traditional exam-only equivalent of IGCSE, still offered by some private and international schools in Malaysia.
Unlike IGCSE, O-Level has no coursework component — assessment is 100% examination-based.
It is widely recognised for university entrance in the UK, Australia, Singapore, and other Commonwealth countries.
In Malaysia, O-Level students typically go on to A-Level or IB.
Popular O-Level subjects include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English.
Because O-Level has no coursework component, the entire subject grade is decided in one externally-marked exam sitting (usually in May/June or October/November), which is why students switching from IGCSE mid-programme need to adjust to a purely exam-technique-driven approach rather than relying on coursework marks to cushion a weak paper.
O-Level is also the qualification most commonly used by students transferring from a Singapore-curriculum school, since Singapore's own O-Level exam (administered by SEAB) follows a very similar Cambridge-aligned syllabus.

Mrs Sundar · parent of SPM 2025
My daughter struggled with English her whole life. After 1 year with Ms Jane, she got A+ in SPM English. Paper 2 essay structure she taught was life-changing.
Mr Faisal · parent of IGCSE Year 11
Ms Jane is firm but kind. My son actually looks forward to English class now.
O-Level and IGCSE cover similar content. O-Level is considered slightly more rigorous because there is no coursework component — every mark comes from the final exam.
O-Level is less common than IGCSE in Malaysia but still offered in some private schools. It is more prevalent in Singapore-oriented schools.
Many IGCSE tuition centres also cover O-Level, as the syllabuses overlap significantly. Look for Cambridge-accredited centres with qualified tutors.
Some schools allow switching between IGCSE and O-Level, especially early in the programme, since the core syllabus content overlaps heavily. O-Level's lack of coursework means students moving from IGCSE need extra practice adjusting to a fully exam-based format.
